Devotchka @ the Troubadour / Little Miss Sunshine

I have a tendency to become obsessed with things rather quickly.  I find something I love only to listen it on repeat over and over again and I care for no other song on my iPod.   The last week, my obsession has been DevotchKa.  A HUGE thank you to Virginia for forcing the cd upon me and having an extra ticket to the show.

If you have not seen the incredible Little Miss Sunshine yet, do so now.  You will not be dissapointed.  It is one of the best movies I have seen all year (but I have not seen SOAP yet, so I really can't say for sure).   DevotchKa is featured throughout the movie (and the trailer) and the music fits perfectly in a movie that is so full of chaos, you hardly even notice how strong the music is.

After listening to their most recent album several times last week, I have decided that DevotchKa will be huge.  I don't make these predictions often.  I said it several years ago about the Decemberists and now they are signed to Capitol and are playing the Wiltern in a few weeks.  DevotchKa is stellar.  Their live show is superb. Their sound is unique and unlike much out there now.  If I had to describe it myself, I would say: gypsy-klezmer-mariachi rock.

"This fascinating little quartet from Denver Colorado has made a wistful, beautifully-arranged something that isnt really an indie rock record, and isnt really a jazz record, and isnt really a mariachi/norteno (or Eastern European) folk record. Its the album you put on when you want to wallow, when you want to brood, when you want to shut your windows and close your blinds and lose yourself in the wistful tragedy of love and loss and hope and nostalgia that bubbles to the surface in all of your darker, finer moments."  (Filter Magazine)

Their show Friday night at the Troubadour was great.  Flirting with all different genres of music and proving to the sold out crowd that they can excel in all of them.  I loved every minute of it, but the highlight of the night was when they played "How it Ends".  "How it Ends" is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard recently.  The ending alone, with the repeated verse "And you already know / Yes you already know / How this will end" gets me a bit emotional everytime I hear it.  Their version Friday night was incredible, complete with an audience sing a long.

Take a listen to this similar version:

i didn't love Little Miss Sunshine. Going to the Cyclones game tonight.

Joel - You are so close to getting your Cyclones ticket revoked for not loving the movie.

Dan - Don't forget that the trailer to Everything Is Illuminated heavily featured the same song.

I didn't see the movie, so I'm not sure if it's *in* the movie.

in my obsession over the song, I read that it was in the Everything Was Illuminated trailer. I thought it worked really well in that trailer too.

Have fun at the cyclones game.
