Last night, I watched the first two acts of Spike Lee's "When the Levees Broke" on HBO. It is incredibly painful to watch and yet incredibly important for everyone to see. I know people don't really want me to get on anything that resembles a soap box, but the way our country looked and the way our country treated the residents of the Gulf Coast is truly sad and despicable.
Spike Lee has created an amazing portrait of the last year by interviewing everyone (although we haven't seen Anderson Cooper yet) and finding some incredible news footage that puts everything in perspective. Not surprisingly, the best footage comes from foreign press who were shocked and amazed that this sort of thing would happen in America.
I was in Arizona right after Katrina struck and Adam and I were basically glued to the television. I was instantly taken back to that time tonight, remembering certain interviews or photos that have stayed with me or will continue to stay with me for a long time.
Thank you Spike Lee for making this movie and telling these people's stories. These are stories that need to be told and documented and I could not think of a better person to do it.
Acts III and IV air tonight on HBO and the entire thing (all four hours) will be rebroadcast next week. It will also be on HBO On Demand starting Wednesday.
